Becoming a Tutor with Lanterna

Here at Lanterna we are always looking for new people to join our team of tutors! Our organisation is made up of high achieving, recent IB graduates who are passionate about improving the lives and education of young people around the world. In this blog post we will explore the reasons why becoming a tutor may be right for you and take you through the application process.

Why become a Lanterna tutor?

Becoming a tutor with Lanterna is a great way to gain real life work experience. As a tutor you will develop excellent communication skills. Being able to break large and tricky concepts down into easy to understand parts is a valuable and transferable skill that many companies look for in graduates.

At the same time, you will play an active role in improving the experiences that current students have in secondary education. It’s an amazing opportunity to put your hard earned knowledge of revising and completing coursework to good use. Having recently completed the IB or A Levels, you are in a unique position to help current students. You truly understand what they are going through, in a way that their teachers and parents are unlikely to.

Tutoring with Lanterna is an excellent job to have alongside university studies. The flexible hours allow you to earn money and gain experience around lectures, practicals, and hobbies. It also allows you to work more when you have the time, and decrease your hours when things get busy.

What are we looking for?

At Lanterna we are looking for driven, highly achieving, recent IB and A Level graduates who are passionate about improving the experiences and education of current students.

For IB tutors, you will need to have successfully completed the IB Diploma Programme with a 7 in all subjects that you are interested in tutoring. Additionally, we ask that you have scored highly overall. Generally our tutors have scored 40 or more points.

Importantly, we are also looking for passion in our tutors. Our tutors need to be passionate about their subjects and passing along knowledge to current students. It is important that you have excellent communication skills and are able to explain concepts clearly in a friendly manner. Additionally, it is important that you have a strong work ethic in all that you do.

How does the application process work?

If this sounds like you, then the next step is to complete our online application form which can be found here. It asks about how you scored in your subjects. It also asks a few questions about your experiences at school and why you would like to be a tutor.

After you’ve submitted your application you can expect to hear from us regarding the next step. If we think that you would be a good fit for our team, you will be invited to an online interview.

In the online interview you will asked to teach a short lesson from one of the subjects that you are interested in tutoring to a member of the Lanterna team. This allows us to see your communication and interpersonal skills firsthand! It also helps us see the passion that you have for your subject.

After the online interview, you will be informed of the outcome of your application. If you accept a position we will provide you with training before your first tutoring session. You will  also be assigned a Lanterna Tutor Parent who will be there to answer any questions you may have and advise you based on their extensive experience.

If you are interested in applying to join our team please fill out the application form which can be found here. The success of Lanterna is based on the personal experiences and knowledge of our amazing tutors. We are always looking for new talented individuals to join the ever growing Lanterna family! If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
